Where There’s a Will There’s a Way

If you’re like two thirds of Americans, you haven’t gotten around to getting a will or engaging in any meaningful estate planning process—even after living through, experiencing, and watching the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. You may even agree with the more than 50% of your friends and neighbors who believe that having a will is at least somewhat important.

According to Caring.com’s most recent Wills and Estate Planning Study, the top 4 reasons more than 2/3rds of us don’t have a will are:

1. We haven’t gotten around to it. (We can relate!)
2. We don’t think we enough assets to leave to anyone. (Same! However, the reality is different for most of us.)
3. We don’t know how to get a will. (Keep reading!)
4. We assume the whole process will be expensive. (In reality, it can be free for most of us.)

August is National Make-A-Will Month, and we’re offering our next free will workshop on September 1st! (One day late I guess).

1. Your Children – If you have kids under 18, you need to pick who you want to serve as their guardian in your absence.
2. Your Grandchildren – If you made your current will when your now adult children were in elementary school, you may want to change things up
3. Your Wishes – If you don’t make a will, the state will give you one, and you may not like it. Plus, you need to select a person you trust to oversee the process in your place.
4. Your Legacy – If you have an organization you’ve supported or enjoyed—like your church or The River—you can include a gift to that organization(s) in your will as well.
