Intentionality
I’ve never really been a person that makes New Year’s resolutions. Somebody once suggested instead of making a resolution, that I come up with a “word of the year”. I thought about it for a few weeks and I felt like “Intentional” is my word for this year, so I’m striving to be intentional with my relationship with the Lord. Keeping His vision for my life ahead of my desires. I want to be intentional with my money… saving and giving more and wanting less. Being intentional with how I take care of my body and mind by monitoring what goes in my mouth, ears, and eyes while also working on physical health at the gym. Living intentionally by spending less time on social media and watching TV and more time with friends building real relationships. Finally, I want to be intentional at work by managing my time and communication so I can be more efficient and serve my coworkers better.
In the hustle and bustle of life, it’s easy to lose sight of what truly matters—our walk with God. Yet, Scripture calls us to be intentional in every step we take, to cultivate a deep and meaningful relationship with our Creator. Let’s explore why being intentional in our walk with God is of paramount importance.
Verse 1: Proverbs 16:9 (NIV)
“In their hearts humans plan their course, but the LORD establishes their steps.”
This verse encapsulates the essence of intentionality in our walk with God. While we may make plans and set goals, ultimately, it is the Lord who directs our steps. Being intentional means aligning our plans with God’s will. It involves seeking His guidance and surrendering our desires to His divine purpose. When we walk in step with God, our paths are sure, and our journey becomes one of fulfillment and purpose.
Verse 2: Colossians 3:23-24 (NIV)
“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.”
Intentionality extends beyond mere actions; it encompasses the attitude of our hearts. As followers of Christ, we are called to live every moment with purpose, offering our work and service as unto the Lord. Whether in our vocations, relationships, or daily tasks, we are to strive for excellence, knowing that our ultimate reward comes from serving Christ faithfully. This verse reminds us that even the mundane aspects of life hold significance when approached with a heart devoted to God.
Verse 3: Psalm 119:105 (NIV)
“Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.”
God’s Word serves as our guide and source of wisdom as we navigate life’s journey. Being intentional in our walk with God requires a commitment to immerse ourselves in His Word daily. It is through Scripture that we gain insight into His character, understand His will, and find strength for the journey ahead. Just as a lamp illuminates a dark path, God’s Word illuminates our way, enabling us to walk in His truth and righteousness.
I hope you are encouraged to pursue intentionality with me this year. Even in the little things, let’s commit to seeking His will, serving Him wholeheartedly, and allowing His Word to illuminate our path. In doing so, I know we will experience a fuller life walking closely with our Creator.
