The holidays give us a great chance to connect with our families. Along with some great food and conversations, I think it’s important to have some fun as a family, too!
Here are a few fun games to make your holiday gatherings even better this year:
Name That Turkey Tune: (Everyone can play!)
Split into two teams, and have each player take turns singing familiar songs, but replace all the lyrics with the word gobble. Each team has 30 seconds to guess the song, and if they can’t guess it in time, the other team has a chance to guess. Choose a category for each round if you’d like, such as Christmas Songs, Pop Songs, etc.
Balloon stomp: (Everyone can play!)
All you need for this game is some string and a lot of balloons! Have each person blow up two balloons and tie one on each of their legs. Once everyone is ready to go, split up into two or three teams, depending on the size of your family. On the count of three, each team tries to pop the other teams’ balloons while keeping theirs from being popped.
Cornhole: (4 players)
This is a classic Midwest game! Four players split into two teams. One player for each team stands at each board and alternates tossing bean bags onto the other board for points. Get 21 points exactly to win! For exact rules, click here.
Spoons: (Everyone can play!)
Spoons is like Musical Chairs, but with a bit of a twist! Have everyone sit in a circle, and grab a spoon for every player except one person. Put the spoons in the middle, and get a deck of cards. As the dealer passes cards along, everyone tries to get four-of-a-kind in their hand. The first person to do it grabs a spoon. Once that person grabs a spoon, everyone has to grab one, and whoever doesn’t get one gets a letter. Whenever someone get enough letters to spell, “Spoons (S-P-O-O-N-S),” they’re eliminated. Fishbowl: (Everyone can play!)
The only things you’ll need for this game are some small pieces of paper and pens. Have everyone write down three separate words on three pieces of paper, fold them up, and put them in a bowl. Split everyone up into two teams. There are three rounds: Taboo, Password, and Charades.
-For Taboo, each team alternates sending a member to get points. Set a one-minute timer, and the person will grab words out of the bowl and use words and sentences to try to get their teammates to guess as many words in one minute as they can. Each guessed word counts as one point. The first round ends when all of the words run out. Put the words back in the bowl and go to Round 2.
-For Password, you do the same thing except each person can only use one word to describe the words. Once all the words in the container run out, place all the words back into the container for the third round.
-For Charades, the person needs to act out the words for their team to guess the word. When all the words run out, tally all the points. The team with the most points wins the game. Click here to learn more.
Euchre: (4 players)
If you’ve never played Euchre before, there’s a bit of a learning curve. But after learning it, it might just become one of your favorite games! It’s a card game played with four people split into two teams, and your goal is to win hands based on what suit is considered trump. I’ll leave it to the experts to explain, so click here to learn more.
You can play one game in about 20 minutes, so if you have enough people, you might even be able to make a Euchre tournament!
Heads Up: (Everyone can play!)
Here’s a game for the family members who are always on their phone. For $1 on the App Store or the Google Play Store, you can download this great game. Split into two teams, and have one team alternate sending one player out to the front. That person holds the phone up to their forehead so that they cannot see the words. The team has to use words and phrases to try to get the player to guess the word on their head. Each word guessed counts as one point. Play as many rounds as you’d like! You can see more info here.
