When you think about all the tension and division that exist in our world, living out these verses might feel almost impossible. And yet, we get put in situations with people who think and live differently than us – so how do we make it work and live in peace with the people we disagree with?
I think this idea from Father Richard Rohr is a start. He suggests that with time comes understanding; “when you’ve loved enough, when you’ve suffered enough, when you’ve made enough mistakes,
when you realize that even your good things had some bad to them, and that even your biggest mistakes had some great lessons in them” – these are the things that begin to teach you a different way of thinking.
I’ve not only found this to be true, but freeing. My own experiences with love, loss, success, and failure have allowed me to look at people who think differently than me with a new perspective. It’s not about dismissing right and wrong, but offering compassion and empathy, “as far as it depends on” me.
Romans 12:17-18 Do not repay anyone evil for evil…If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.
