Meditating on a Hymn of God’s Grace

One of my favorite hymns is Come Thou Fount. I love what it says about God’s grace:

Come thou fount of every blessing, Tune my heart to sing thy grace,
Streams of mercy never ceasing, Call for songs of loudest praise.

Teach me some melodious sonnet, Sung by flaming tongues above,
Praise the mount I’m fixed upon it, Mount of God’s unchanging love

Here I raise my Ebenezer, Hither by thy help I’ve come,
And I hope by thy good pleasure, Safely to arrive at home

Jesus sought me when a stranger, Wandering from the fold of God,
He to rescue me from danger, Interposed his precious blood.

Oh to grace how great a debtor, Daily i’m constrained to be,
Let thy grace now like a fetter, Bind my wandering heart to thee.

Prone to wander, Lord I feel it, Prone to leave the God I love,
Here’s my heart O take it seal it, Seal it for thy courts above

Come thou fount of every blessing, Tune my heart to sing thy grace,
Streams of mercy never ceasing, Call for songs of loudest praise.

Teach me some melodious sonnet, Sung by flaming tongues above,
Prasie the mount I’m fixed upon it, Mount of God’s unchanging love

How wonderful is it that we can express these feelings directly to God, through praise and prayer. Consider using this song in a prayer of reflection:

Thank you Lord for your constant flow of grace and mercy on us, we don’t deserve it, we cannot earn it and yet it keeps coming. You deserve so much praise.

Teach me increasingly beautiful ways to express joyful praise to you. You are the source of everything. Your love is like a mountain, it doesn’t move. your love is constant.

Lord let me recognize your work in my life as a monument to your help, faithfulness, and eternal covenant and I pray that I am reminded daily.

You pursued me when I was caught up in my own desires. Ignorant to the danger I was in you sent your Son to die in my place, thank you.

I depend on your grace everyday and I pray that I come to know you better because of that.

I am prone to wander from you. Knowing what I know about you and your unchanging love, I still replace you with meaningless things.

I pray that I am constantly reminded of your grace and love you have for me. Let me never take these things for granted but rather praise and worship you without ceasing.

Amen
