Why We Need to Celebrate Leap Day

Leap-Day-IdeasTime is our most precious resource. Think of those deadlines at work, or that moment when you slump down in the couch after a long day… Being busy, overcommitted, tired, and weary seems to be part of our routine. We all know it’s unhealthy, and frankly we feel that there are other things we’d rather do than watch popcorn crumbs sink into the couch during our favorite Netflix show.

Well, I have great news for you. Something big comes around every four years that can give you hope. No, I’m not talking about a presidential race or the Summer Olympics. It’s Leap Year, and Leap Day is almost here!

Leap Day is Monday, February 29. Since Mondays are an awful time to celebrate this bonus day, I invite you do celebrate Leap Day on Sunday, February 28. Take this day and do something awesome.

If you feel like planning something special, then make reservations, get a map ready, and do something FUN. If you’re the spontaneous type, keep that day open for wherever the wind may take you.

This isn’t an easy practice in our work-until-you-drop society, but it’s one of the healthiest things we can do for ourselves – to take a day and make it fun, doing things we have always wanted to do. Even though we’re adults, we need to turn off our brains, play, and be ourselves in this pressure-filled world.

Here are some fun ideas to get you started:

  1. Go on a walk at your local park.
  2. Make a scavenger hunt for your family/friends.
  3. Do a springtime craft you’ve been dying to tackle.
  4. Make a recipe that’s been sitting on Pinterest a little too long.
  5. Donate a bunch of clothes.
  6. Make s’mores around the fire pit in your backyard.
  7. Do something adventurous, like skydiving!
  8. Make it a “Game Day” and play games all day (while eating pizza, of course).
  9. Get friends together to play a sport outside.
  10. Learn a new card game.
  11. TAKE A NAP. Seriously! What says “seize the day” like doing something you never get enough time to do?
  12. Go to a small hole-in-the-wall restaurant.
  13. Have a karaoke night with your friends.
  14. Dress up and go downtown for a much-needed night out.
  15. Lounge around. Hey, no judgment here. Some people who work too hard need a quiet, restful day.
  16. Go to Half Price Books and get a new book at a great price!
  17. Buy a puppy. Or five.
  18. Get a fresh new look with a hair cut.
  19. Go thrifting.
  20. Tell someone you love them.
  21. Reconnect with an old friend over lunch.
  22. Go hiking at Old Man’s Cave.
  23. Paint an old piece of furniture to make it new.
  24. Plan a trip this year, even if it’s a small one.
  25. [Insert your stellar idea below in the comments.]

P.S. Sunday is supposed to be 55 degrees and partly sunny. We’ll see if that weather holds up for our adventures.
